Check the tire and wheel before driving farther
After a strong impact, stop in a safe place and inspect the affected tire. Look for a rapid loss of pressure, a sidewall bubble, exposed cords, a bent-looking wheel or damage that changes how the tire sits. Sidewall damage can fail without much additional warning.
Do not crawl beneath a vehicle supported only by its factory jack. If the tire is losing air or the wheel is visibly damaged, arrange assistance rather than continuing at normal speed.
Notice new steering and suspension behavior
A pothole can stress steering and suspension components or reveal wear that was already developing. Changes may appear immediately or become more obvious during the next few trips.
- Vehicle pulls or the steering wheel sits off-center
- Clunking over bumps or while turning
- New vibration through the seat or steering wheel
- Uneven ride height or unusual bouncing
Listen for wheel-bearing symptoms
A worn wheel bearing may produce a humming, growling or grinding sound that changes with road speed or steering load. Tire wear, brakes and other rotating parts can create similar noises, so sound alone is not enough to identify the failed component.
A hands-on inspection can check for looseness, rough rotation, visible suspension damage and other clues. Alignment measurements or tire-machine work may still require a properly equipped shop after mechanical concerns are addressed.
Know when the car should stay parked
Stop driving if the tire is damaged, steering control has changed significantly, a wheel appears loose, the vehicle sits unevenly or severe grinding or clunking is present. Even a short drive can worsen a damaged tire or suspension part.
